2009 Budget

The City of Cherryvale has proposed $3,706,464 budget for all budgeted funds for 2009. The budget represents an overall increase of 6.4%. The budget also contains a 1.37 mill levy increase to fund the Cherryvale Public Library elevator ADA accessibility project.

The 1.37 mill increase represents an additional $7.88 of property taxes per year on a $50,000 house.

I would urge you to review the budget, ask questions, and make suggestions.

Thanks as always for your help.

I don't like the mill levy increase, but I understand the purpose. I want to see the Library available to all citizens.

Is this library project really a wise move on the city's part. This is not required to be done. Seems like a lot of money for something that will most likely not be used that often. I am glad to see city hall being revamped. The first phase looks great and that building is used every business day all day. I am sure that the second phase will be great as well.

I think the ATV's shouldn't be allowed. This is a very bad decision on the cities part. Whats gonna happen when someone gets killed or seriously injured on one of these ATV's and the parent or injured goes after the city. Also I have noticed throughout the short time they have been allowed and I have yet to see anybody that appears to be using this for farming purposes. Nor have I saw anyone wearing helmets. All that has been noticed is the immature teenagers ripping up and down the street. You need to fix this problem ASAP.

Why the increase in the budget? What was accomplished in 2008 to warrant the increase for 2009? (Excluding the addition of 2 mill for the library)

Didn't the library have a chair lift in the mid-late 80's? Seems like to me I remember there being one there either near the end of or just after Louise Kaufman's tenure. (It went in the same time that the ramps were made in front.)What happened to it? What about all the money spent on it? If it didn't work once, why are we the same thing again?

The original chair lift that was installed in the 1980s was difficult to operate, and it required two people to operate. The new system is not a chair lift, it is very similar to an elevator, and the original chair lift did not meet current ADA standards. The new lift can be operated without assistance from staff.

so because it was Inconvenient we just threw it away and now are going to spend 100,000 dollars on a new one? makes a lot of sense. Wouldn't it be easier to get upload the inventory of the books to the internet ?Skyways? and deliver the books.

So how long will it be before this new contraption is as out of compliance as the old chair lift that was removed?

The original "chair lift" was installed in the 1980s before the enactment of ADA. The original "chair lift" has been removed since the mid-1990s. So it has not been an option, for a very long time. ADA states that public entries have to provide access to programming, and the availability of Internet at the library is a very large piece of the public programming that the library provides. So, it would be hard to replicate that without being able to enter the building. Also, when the issue was discussed at the August Council Workshop citizens felt that it was very important that the library remain in its current location, and the City Council was in agreement.

What a great city! Of course what is a great city without a great administrator. Cherryvale should realize what a great talent he is.

I would ask what else is falling into the 6% increase? Why do we have a library that has accessability issues? The biggest problem that I see is that whatever the problem, higher taxes are the solution. I understand that there are times we need new equipment/etc... But I can't go to work and demand a raise from my boss because I need a new car. I have to budget the money I already have, or figure something else out.

WOW is all that I can say. I cannot get over how much better Cherryvale is looking compared to a few years ago.

You can tell people are taking pride in that community, and working on fixing it up.
